“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

Piyush Auluck is an Engineer who works as a Learning & Development specialist during the day, but later in the evenings, you would quite occasionally find him playing live gigs on the Guitar in the city of Hyderabad.

Being friends with a Learning & Development specialist all the way from school surely comes with its perks. Apart from introducing me to the world of web development, conversations with him over time did influence me to jump from a Sales job at Western Union to a Quantitative Finance Research position. So what does Piyush Auluck really do in his job? Also, what’s the Charminar Flamenco Project?

What is a Learning & Development Specialist?

Key skills required:

  • a passion for helping people develop
  • being great at project management
  • strong communicator – enjoys presenting

Duties include:

  • improving work and behavioral skills
  • motivating employees
  • delivering training program

How did you start out in L&D and what does your role involve?

I kind of organically grew into the role of learning and development. I learned along the way and I found out what worked. I think that’s a really nice way to get into a role because it’s constantly positive, you’re constantly learning.

Training is about the technical stuff, but learning & development is about how to get the most out of people in the roles that they’re doing. And that is no different no matter what industry or sector you’re in. My role is really about helping the success of the business by supporting all the different departments and people within it. As a learning and development manager, my job is not really about providing solutions or telling people the answers, my job is to help people find a way to get to those answers.

What are the keys skills you need in L&D?

One of the key skills I think you need going into learning and development is tenacity. You need to have thick skin – it’s very challenging! You have to be extremely positive as well, always looking at the positive side of things and being able to spin any kind of challenges you get in a training situation into a positive and to get people to think about what they’re saying. My passion is getting people to think differently and approach their roles differently and it’s something I’ve learned over time and evolved into.

What do you like best about working in L&D?

“I think the best thing about learning & development is actually delivering training. I think when you train, you get a buzz similar to that of surviving a political storm. What you do applies in all industries you might work in. I’ve worked in NGOs, Manufacturing units as an Engineer, Power plant, BPO’s. I’ve worked in recruitment, and people think and react in the same way no matter what industry or sector they’re in.”, says Piyush Auluck-  L & D Specialist

How Piyush helped me rediscover my Engineering side

Still remember the time about 7 years back, when I was fully immersed in Finance and Italian, doing manual sales and discussing some basic web development stuff with Piyush. Ever since I have come a long way to actually even post my own Web3 development guide blog post.
We used to study Physics together at the age of 15 in a very competitive environment. Hence, I became determined to recover some of the opportunity cost of not focusing on Technology during my Finance years in Italy.
